Few Dutch rock bands are eligible for a six-CD Anthology Box. Most bands in the genre simply haven’t made enough albums. Helloïse is the exception to the rule. From their inception in 1984 to the last show in 2013, Helloïse has played a significant role in the Dutch rock history. Stan Verbraak (vocals), Arjan Boogerds (guitar), Ben Blaauw (guitar), Marchell Remeeus (bass) and Ernst van Ee (drums) had gained the necessary experience with Highway Chile, Lemming and Zebra already. Anthology demonstrates where the combination of their creative talents has led to. All officially published Helloïse albums are represented in this box: COSMOGONY, POLARITY, A TIME & A PLACE FOR EVERYTHING and FATA MORGANA, each one enhanced with bonus tracks. The dessert is formed by CDs five and six, grouped together under the title ETERNITY. CD five contains demo recordings from the years 1984, 1986 and 1997. That alone is a real treat. CD six contains a remix of POLARITY by producer Oscar Holleman (Within Temptation, Ayreon, After Forever) entitled POLARITY 2.0, which is supplemented by four previously recorded tracks mixed by Sascha Paeth (Avantasia, Epica, Kamelot, Rhapsody). These songs have never been published before. Until now. The release of the 6-CD HELLOÏSE ANTHOLOGY BOX is a unique event in the Dutch hard rock history. For the first time all the relevant achievements of the Rotterdam band have been brought together in a beautifully wrapped box with a flood of bonus songs, unique photos and other memorable attributes. 88 Songs in total, good for six and half hour of entertainment. A must for fans of the band and fans of melodic hard rock in general. Not only in the Netherlands but worldwide.

Talking to the Moon is a concept album plenty of stories about the moon and the relationship with the man. It's a modern symphony on which every musician print his own musical vision. Deluxe edition with sixty songs all related to the night and the Moon. Coordinated by Jose Manuel Medina as main producer and presented by David Rohl as executive producer. It combines vast orchestral music with progressive rock, new age, celtic music, classical, ambient, pop, hard rock, etc… Seven years were needed to complete the production of the entire album. With an approximate duration of 227 minutes, the collection has a great variety of musical colors. The combination of musicians from very different styles gave rise to the immortalization of beautiful musical landscapes throughout. The repertoire is enriched by the talents of great figures such as David Rohl, Ashley Mulford, Theo Travis, Troy Donockley, Marc Atkinson, Lisa Fury, Geoffrey Richardson and many more…







ANGLAGARD: LIVE MADE IN NORWAY BLU-RAY & DVD

Legendary Swedish symphonic progressive rock band ÄNGLAGÅRD is proud to present their first ever professionally filmed concert, set to be released worldwide on February 10th, 2017.
“Live: Made in Norway” was captured at Musikkflekken, Sandvika, Norway on February 21st, 2015, marking the band’s return to Norway stages after an absence of 23 years.

Edited by Martin Gustafson, with audio production and mixing by world renowned audio engineer Alar Suurna, and art design and production supervision by band’s long-time collaborator Joel Barrios, the two-hour performance is a stellar capturing of live art through and through; a perfect testimony of Änglagård’s unique take on progressive rock, showcasing their swirling, angular crescendos along with frenetic rhythms and howling mellotron, blended with truly emotional sudden softer passages. A sonic rollercoaster of aggressive music in odd meter, subtle parts and melancholic beauty, building suspense and abrupt stops, with a wondrous interplay of sounds, this visual presentation is definitely not for the faint-hearted. Änglagård’s extreme level of delicacy in phrasing and dynamic is a tough match to beat in progressive music and should hold up even in the face of the snootiest of music connoisseurs.

SPACE DEBRIS: BEHIND THE GATE 2CD

Das 13. Album und 6. Studioalbum von Space Debris zeigt die Band mit ihrem bisher besten Sound.

Nicht zuletzt der Neuzugang am Bass mit Janni Schmitt, (auch bekannt durch die letzte Miller Anderson-Tour) bringt eine neue Qualität in die Band, wie man schon auf der letztjährigen 7“ Single mit dem Song ´New Rag´ hören konnte. Die neue Produktion schließt diesen Song auf der Doppel-CD-Version ein. Die Vinyl-DLP wird mit der Single komplett. Die Band hat ihre Spielweise weiterentwickelt und um neue Sounds ergänzt, wie z.B. Keyboard-Choräle, die an Deep Purples „April“ erinnern, sowie „floydige“, spacig-moderne, hendrixartig-hardrockige und jazzige Elemente führen zum typischen Space Debris Feeling, wobei jeder Song eine eigene Geschichte erzählt und eine eigene Farbe zu haben scheint. Das Covermotiv zeigt, auf welche Reise sich der Hörer begibt: in den Raum „hinter dem Tor“. Musikalisch bedeutet das für den intensiven Hörer langsam, Song für Song, Türen zu öffnen und mit der Band in den Space zu driften.

PENNING, LES: BELERION CD+DVD

Feat. Robert Reed and Phil Bates // Mike Oldfield collaborator worked with Magenta's Rob Reed the result the new album Belerion. Les Penning, the recorder player who appeared on Mike Oldfield's Ommadawn album, is to release a new solo record, Belerion.

Penning first came to prominence through his association with Oldfield, not only featuring on the aforementioned Ommadawn, but also on the Seasonal hits In Dulce Jubilo and Portsmouth. Indeed the genesis of Belerion goes back 40 years to a time when Penning and Oldfield were still working together. More recently, Penning appeared on Rob reed's Sanctuary II project, the Magenta man's homage to Oldfield' early work.

"When Mike Oldfield left Bradnor Hill and we no longer graced the halls of Penrhos Court, we still recorded at his new home at Througham Slad in Gloucestershire and it was there that we recorded seven pieces that were representative of our repertoire at Penrhos," says Penning of his time playing with Oldfield when the matter lived in Herefordshire. "Although they were intended to form part of an album I was making, somehow it never got made - until now.”

Reed has worked with Penning on the new album , which features a new recording of Portsmouth, as well as former singer and guitarist of ELO2, Phil Bates. "Without the glory that is Phil Bates I could not have recorded this and without the genius of Rob Reed the album would never have been finished, let alone pressed," adds Penning.

Belerion will be released through Reed's Tigermoth label. The 14-track CD comes with an additional DVD, featuring an interview with Penning and promo videos, including the new version of Portsmouth, which can be seen below.

KARMAMOI: SILENCE BETWEEN SOUNDS

Die in London und Rom beheimatete Band Karmamoi brauchte wegen diverser Personalverluste (sie sind jetzt nur noch zu dritt) über 2 Jahre zum Einspielen ihrer dritten CD. Man verzichtete aus diversen Gründen auf die Einstellung eines neuen Sängers und ließ die Vocals von diversen SängerInnen interpretieren. Was eigentlich als Notlösung gedacht war, entpuppt sich im Nachhinein als Glücksfall. Die unterschiedlichen Stimmen machen die Songs zu etwas Besonderem und es fällt mir nach vielen Durchgängen immer noch schwer mich auf eine Lieblingsstimme fest zu legen.

Sara Rinaldi mit ihrer eher rauchigen Stimme ist 'ne Wucht, aber auch die anderen, eher dezenteren Stimmen überzeugen. Auch Gastmusiker wurden erstmals in den Aufnahmeprozess eingebunden. So hört man neben der 3-köpfigen Band auch noch Cello, Piano, Flöte und Clavinet. Was die Klangfarbe sehr nuanciert wirken lässt. Kompositorisch agiert die Band sowieso auf hohem Niveau. Sie erinnern manchmal an Porcupine Tree in den härteren Songs wie SIRIO oder am Anfang von PLATO'S CAVE mit diesem fulminanten Gitarrensolo. Dennoch agieren sie ansonsten eigenständig. Die Musik fließt aber öfter als sie rockt. Der Opener SILENCE BETWEEN SOUNDS/NASHIRA zeigt die Richtung an. Der Track bewegt sich zwischen perlendem Klavier, heftiger Gitarre und forderndem Bass hin und her. Veredelt von Sara Rinaldi's Stimme und von einigen Stilwechseln geprägt ist der längste Song des Albums ein toller Beginn. Mit ATMA geht es dann ruhiger und bedächtiger weiter. Die Keys schweben im Raum, das Klavier spielt dunkle Akkorde und die Sängerin Hellena haucht ihren Text ins Mikro. Eine gehörige Dosis Prog kriegt der Hörer dann mit SIRIO geboten. Die verschiedenen Gitarren brennen hier ein Feuerwerk ab und rocken höllisch los. MARTES kommt dann wieder getragener und feierlicher daher, bietet tollen Gesang und eine greifbare Melodie. Fulminant startet die Gitarre mit einem Solo PLATO'S CAVE. Wenn dann Sara Rinaldi mit ihrer rauchigen Stimme einstimmt, begleitet nur von einer A-Gitarre, sperren sich die Ohren auf. Das ist definitiv ein Highlight der CD. Im Mittelteil dann eine Flöte, das Cello und ein strenger Rhythmus, bevor der Schluss mit tobender Orgel eingeleitet wird. Die beiden letzten Songs LOST DAYS und CANIS MAJORIS sind dann beide zurückhaltender. Ersterer klingt nach Anathema, besitzt aber glücklicherweise nicht deren Pathos. Der letzte Track ist mit seiner Flöte und seinen schwebenden Keyboards mystisch. Insgesamt eine solide Produktion die ihre Fans finden sollte. Marc Colling/BBS





EYE: VISION AND AGELESS LIGHT

Der progressive Spirit der 70er reflektiert die Musik von EYE: Pink Floyd (selbstverständlich), The Moody Blues, ELP und Yes und die Heroen der Band: Nektar, stehen Pate. Führt man der EYE dann noch frühen Metal von Black Sabbath, Uriah Heep und Deep Purple hinzu, so hat man eine sehr potente Beschreibung vom Sound, den EYE auf - Vision And Ageless Light- darbieten. Der Band ist aber nicht nur der Einfluss wichtig, auch die ganze Hardware ist original aus den 70ern. Produziert hat Terry Brown (Rush, Fates Warning), das Artwork stammt von Hugh Syme (Rush).

EYE zum Dritten. Oder, zum Vierten, wenn man das nur als LP oder Tonbandkassette erhältliche Livealbum "Live At Relay" mitzählt. Auf jeden Fall ist "Vision And Ageless Light" Studioalbum Nummer drei der Retroprogger aus Ohio. Die Besetzung hat sich offenbar stark verändert. Wenn man den Credits glauben will, ist von dem Quartett, das die ersten beiden Alben der Gruppe eingespielt hat, nur noch Schlagzeuger Brandon Smith mit dabei. Dass E-Gitarre und Bass neu besetzt wurden, kann ja durchaus sein. Allerdings ist auf keinem der rezenten Bandfotos eine Dame auszumachen, insbesondere keine, die sich an einem Tasteninstrument betätigen würde. Der Rezensent nimmt daher schwer an, dass es sich bei Lisa Bella Donna weiterhin um Adam Smith handelt. Lassen wir das mal so stehen. Für ihr derzeit neuestes Album sind EYE zu altehrwürdigen Proglabel The Laser’s Edge gewechselt und in der Tat ist "Vision And Ageless Light" das bisher prog-lastigste Album der Band, auch wenn sich die verwendeten Stilingredienzien wenig verändert haben. Einen von Tasten, vielen Tasten, und der E-Gitarre dominierten Retroprog machen EYE auch hier, der Stonerhardrock, Floydiges, Spacerock und Klassisch-Symphonisches zu einem druckvollen, voluminösen und abwechslungsreichen Ganzen verbindet. Der Retrohardrock und das Floydige wurde allerdings weiter reduziert, und durch allerlei Jazzrock, Elektronisches und Retrosynthesizerprog ersetzt - stellenweise. Ansonsten rockt die Band kraftvoll und verspielt durch die stark nach den 70er Jahren des letzten Jahrhunderts klingenden Nummern, versehen mit einem fetten, aber sehr detailreichen und authentischen Sound. Flächige Tastensounds, Retrogeorgel, allerlei Synthesizerfiepen, -zischen und -wabern, elektronische Klangwolken, jazzige E-Pianoläufe und satte Mellotronschübe erzeugt "Bella Donna", druckvoll und dynamisch bis dezent mäandernd. Dazu kommen die mächtige, erdig-jaulende Hardrockgitarre à la Neo-Sabbath, psychedelisch-westcoastartige Gesangslinien (oft begleitet von akustischem Gitarrenschrammeln), ein fetter Bass und das wuselig-wuchtige Schlagwerk. Das Ergebnis ist ein munteres, durchaus originelles (so wurde das in den 70ern sicher von niemandem vermischt) Retro-Rock-Prog-Elektro-Jazzrock-Gemenge, das ziemlich viel Spaß macht, insbesondere in der langen Prog-Suite "As sure as the sun", die so ziemlich alles beinhaltet, was des Retroproggers Herz begehrt. Wer eine Dreiviertelstunde in wohlig-fetten 70er-Jahresounds schweben möchte, die allerdings in einer durchaus eigenen Mischung und sehr kurzweilig vergoren dargeboten werden, der sollte "Vision And Ageless Light" (das in der CD-Version übrigens in einem hübschen Mini-LP-Hülle geliefert wird) auf keinen Fall verpassen!

kennst du die beiden Cave-Scheiben noch nicht?
Gehören für mich zu seinen stärksten überhaupt.

Chuck Prophet macht viele Alben, da bin ich immer skeptisch ob die Qualität darunter leitet.
Gefällt sie dir. Die letzten beiden waren jedenfalls sehr gut.

Ich muss mich erst einmal durch die drei neuen Alben durchhören. Chuck Prophets CD habe ich noch nicht auflegen können. Bei Cave klaffen große Lücken in meinem Regal. Ich habe speziell "Boatman's Call" und "No more shall we part" ausgesucht, weil auch im Rolling Stone Forum diese beiden von vielen als besonders gut bewertet wurden.

Ab Murder Ballads sind für mich alle Scheiben von Cave großartig.
Nur die Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!! hat mich nie wirklich überzeugt.
Skeleton Tree hat sich dermaßen gut entwickelt, dass ich sie zu den besten Alben des Jahrzehnts zählen würde.
