Aus gegebenem Jubiläumsanlass habe ich mal einen eigenen Thread daraus gemacht (parallel zu den Jubiläen der Yes-Alben in deren Subforen). Da ITCOTCK ja durchaus einen enormen Einfluss auf die Progszene ausübte und bis zum heutigen Tag ja auch noch tut, sollte es mit einem eigenen Thread gebührend gefeiert werden. Hier können dann auch zusätzlich noch eigene euerer Erinnerungen an und (Hör)-Erfahrungen mit dem Crimso-Debut gepostet werden. Meine werde ich zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt auflisten.

Hier erstmal noch ein paar Hintergründe zu diesem Album, entnommen aus dem Musikexpress. Bin schon sehr gespannt, wie Fans von Yes, genesis, ELP und Co. auf den letzten Abschnitt reagieren werden.




KING CRIMSON - IN THE COURT OF THE CRIMSON KING (Oktober 1969)
Im Januar Band gründen, im September Genre-definierendes, komplexes Meisterwerk aufnehmen, im Oktober veröffentlichen, im Dezember Bandauflösung: In den 60ern ging im Rock alles noch etwas schneller als heute, aber so flott doch auch selten. mit THE CHEERFUL INSANITY OF GILES, GILES AND FRIPP hatte der exzentrische Gitarrist Robert Fripp - die Antithese zum hedonistischen Rocker - 1968 ein weithin ignoriertes Avant-Jazz-Rock-Album gemacht, dann hatte der eine Giles-Bruder Peter sich abgeseilt. Um Fripp und Drummer Michael Giles sammelten sich nun der Multiinstrumentalist Ian McDonald (Flöten, Vibraphon, Keyboards, Mellotron), der junge Bassist und goldkehlige Sänger Greg Lake und Nicht-Musiker Peter Sinfield, der neben kraftvollen mystizistisch-lyrischen Texten und Lightshow-Konzepten auch den Bandnamen - ein Synonym für den Leibhaftigen - zu dem Unternehmen beisteuerte. Erste stürmische Auftritte - Sternstunde war ein Gig im Vorprogramm der Stones bei deren Konzert im Londoner Hyde Park am 5. Juli 1969 - hinterließen baffe Hörer: Dieser Sound, der da Folk-, Psychedelic-, Hardrock- und Jazz-Einflüsse zu ausufernden Epen von majestätischer Schönheit und Intensität verquickte, dieser Klang des kippenden Hippietraums konnte gleichermaßen betören und einem Angst einjagen. King Crimson galten als das hippste Ding des Sommers - Pete Townshend und Jimi Hendrix waren Fans, John Peel lud sie in seine Show ein -, noch bevor sie im August ins Studio gingen und in Eigenregie ihr Debüt aufnahmen. Das Ergebnis war nicht weniger als ein Wunderwerk; vor allem McDonalds revolutionärer Einsatz des Mellotrons als Lead-Instrument lässt bis heute Ohren überquellen. Und das war's dann auch schon mit King Crimson Mark I: Ende 1969 kündigten McDonald und Giles, entnervt vom Touren; Lake wurde von Keith Emerson für ELP abgeworben (er sang noch aushilfsweise beim zweiten Crimso-Album IN THE WAKE OF POSEIDON mit), Fripp wechselte die Crimso-Line-Ups fortan wie seine Hemden. Die verstörende Schönheit und Intensität dieses Albums erreichte er nie mehr - und in dieser Dichte auch kaum ein anderer Act des nun aus seiner Bugwelle auftauchenden "Progressive Rock".

Zu der Zeit, als ich das erste vom Album hörte, es war die komplette b-side des Albums, hatte ich noch keinen Dunst von King Crimson. Erstaunt war ich dann, als ich erfuhr das dieser JazzRock-Kracher 21st Century Schizoid Man auch auf diesem Album vertreten war. Das verstand ich garnicht, zu dieser doch gefühlvollen b-side, dieser Kracher den ich überhaupt nicht mochte! Aber gottseidank ändern sich die Geschmäcker, man gewöhnt sich dran. Schade, das sich diese Formation so schnell auflößte, ich denke dank Fripp! Er hat ja mit In the Wake of Poseidon eine Kopie versucht, hat aber nicht ganz geklappt. Ist auch besser so!

Bei Jethro Tull meine ich den Flötenklang allgemein, der war schon lange vor KC in der Rockmusik und wurde nicht nur von Tull eingesetzt.

Moody Blues hatten die KC-Balladen sogar schon 1967 vorweggenommen.
Emotionaler Gesang, feierliche Mellotronklänge, Flötenspiel, ausladende Songstrukturen, romantische Stimmungen.

ITCOTCK ist ein Meilenstein und eines meiner Lieblingsalben.
Was ich sagen will ist nur, dass das Rezept von Progrock nicht alleine auf KC zurückgeht.
Da gab es schon jede Menge Bausteine vorher.

Die Amerikaner sehen ihrerseits eine US-Band namens "Touch" als Progrock-Vorreiter.
Ihre einzige Platte (1968) war allerdings ein ziemlicher Flop und die Band verschwand binnen Monate wieder von der Bildfläche.
Kerry Livgren von Kansas oder auch Steve Howe nennen die Band als Einfluß.

@soon: Danke! "Touch" kannte ich noch gar nicht.

Das mit den "Bausteinen" sehe ich ebenso. Prog ist ja nicht einfach aus dem leeren Raum heraus entstanden.

Dennoch eine kritische Bemerkung: ITCOTCK ist auch über den "Schizoid Man" hinaus ungewöhnlich gewesen. Das waren ja nicht einfach nur Balladen, die etwas ausufernder gewesen wären als "Nights in white satin". Hier wurde der Werkcharakter auf mehreren Ebenen ungleich stärker betont. Die Verknüpfung von Text und Musik wurde subtiler. Das Album vereinte in bis dahin wohl einzigartiger Weise Elemente verschiedener Stilrichtungen - was wiederum einen zentralen Wesenszug des Prog ausmacht. Und es war eben auch nicht nur die Querflöte: Wir hören (u.a. Bass-)Klarinetten, Mallets, Konzertgitarre...
Als Ganzes betrachtet stellt das Album nach meinem Kenntnisstand DEN ersten richtigen Kristallisationspunkt dessen dar, was dann als Prog in die Rockgeschichte einging.

Zu den Moody Blues-Parallelen: Die hatte ich beim erstmaligen Hören von ITCOTCK (es war im Spätsommer 2006 kurz nach der WM im eigenen Lande) teilweise auch, muss ich sagen. Diese Parallelen kommen allerdings auch nicht von ungefähr, wenn man weiß, dass Fripp und Co. eine Zeit lang mit dem Moody Blues-Produzenten Tony Clarke, der aus ihnen wohl tatsächlich so etwas wie die neuen Moody Blues machen wollte, zusammengearbeitet haben, dann aber letztendlich doch getrennte Wege gingen. Clarke wollte KC sogar auf dem Moody Blues-eigenen Label "Threshold Records" unter Vertrag nehmen, diese entschieden sich dann jedoch für "Island Records". Früchte dieser Zusammenarbeit dürften jedenfalls die Songs "Epitaph" und "The Court Of The Crimson King", sowie der Titelsong des zweiten KC-Albums "In The Wake Of Poseidon" sein.

Kennt übrigens hier igrnedjemand den Film "Buffalo 66"? Dort gibt es nämlich eine Szene, in der die Protagonistin des Filmes Layla (gespielt von Christina Ricci) zu "Moonchild" einen langsamen Stepp-Tanz vollführt.

Soweit ich mich erinnere, kamen in dem Film auch zwei Songs von Yes vor.
