Q: Do tunes pop into your head, do you noodle around until something interesting comes or is it a more "intellectual" process of sitting in front of a piece of paper? If a combination, which is the most satisfying?

A: For me personally it is a combination of methods for writing a song, though I think it varies widely for most folks. Sometimes I sit at the piano, improvise and write, sometimes at the guitar, sometimes it becomes a process of simply creating production. I'll pull up a drum groove and jam to it. Though most frequently I will get a song idea in my head and I'll either grab a guitar and a piece of paper or I'll grab my handy recorder and simply capture the idea.

My best song ideas come when I've released the concerns of the day so I often get song ideas in the shower. Which is a bummer because sometimes it's late and I've got to get dressed and head back to the studio to put the idea onto my handy recorder (maybe I should keep that thing in the house?) Then, I'll come back the next day and try to develop the idea, unless I feel it is overwhelmingly special. Then I'll stay up and develop it so it doesn't get away.

Working with Jon has been a different process all together. Sometimes he'll send me an idea that I'll take and expand. Other times I'll just develop a track and he'll sing to it. After he sings to it I'll rework the song so it fits better with Jon's new idea.

There was one song where he mentioned an old hit and asked me to write something with that kind of feel. So I wrote this new song, music, lyrics, melody and then he told me to just send the track. So I sent over the track and he voiced a new song over it, melody and partial lyrics.

This particular song was incredible! Special in the extreme! So I immediately developed a new arrangement for it and began producing it out, expanding the idea, reworking some lyrics, adding intro, transitions, instrumental sections and breaks. Once I had it produced out, Jon said let's add a chorus to the section before the first verse and another section between the solo and the outro choruses—so I did. Now Jon will go back and do some additional tweaks to the lyric and re-sing it.

So it's been a ping-pong process and a wonderful collaboration! And that's some insight into the writing process for us!
