Seine Karriere begann in den späten 60er Jahren unter dem Namen John St. Field.
Erste Erfolge feierte er, als Mitglied, der New Wave-Band Doll By Doll, 1979 bis 1982.
In den 80ern veröffentlichte Leven zwei Singles unter seinem eigenen Namen.
1983 fiel er einem tätlichen Angriff zum Opfer, bei dem er beinahe getötet wurde und für 2 Jahre seine Stimme verlor.
In Folge dieser negativen Erlebnisse wurde er Heroinabhängig und benötigte einige Jahre um seine Sucht zu bewältigen.
Danach gründete er den CORE Trust, einer Wohltätigkeitsorganisation mit dem Ziel Drogenabhängigen zu helfen.
Unter den Mitgliedern waren auch Leute wie Prinzessin Diana.
In den frühen 90er Jahren ist Jackie wieder zur Musik zurückgekehrt und veröffentlichte im Jahr 1994 sein erstes richtiges Soloalbum -The Mystery of Love Is Greater Than The Mystery of Death-.
Seine Songs waren stets problembeladen und von düsteren Themen gekennzeichnet.
Musikalisch werden seine, über 20, veröffentlichten Alben von Folk, Soul, Country, Jazz und Rock geprägt.
Leven verbindet auf seinen Alben auch Gedichte und Geschichten mit Musik.
Zum Beispiel das Gedicht "A Blessing" von James Wright auf der - Forbidden Songs of The Dying West - oder die Kurzgeschichte "Faces" von Rainer Maria Rilke auf -Shining Brother, Shining Sister-.
Im Laufe seiner Karriere arbeitete er mit vielen Dichtern und Schriftstellern, darunter Robert Bly und Ian Rankin, sowie Avantgarde-Musiker David Thomas von Kult-Band Pere Ubu.
Jackie Leven erlag am Montag, 14. November, 2011 einem Krebsleiden.
